Celebrities Who Meditate
It’s always interesting to see which celebrities are involved in different wellness and health practices; for me this isn’t because I am particularly wowed by celebrity culture. The reason I think there’s validity in noticing wellness celebrities is that they often have access to the best of things. Their inherent privilege and comes-with-the-territory attention to maintaining health and the appearance of youth, means that celebrities can sometimes be a good gauge for what works in the wellness world. When it comes to celebrity meditation it may well be worth asking “who meditates?”, perhaps even more so if you are interested in being successful - in whatever way success is valid to you.
In this blog I’ll be taking a look at famous people who meditate, Transcendental Meditation celebrities and other successful people who meditate, and to finish up I’ll leave you with a summary of why there are so many famous people that meditate, and how those reasons can be applied to you and me.
Let’s begin by taking a comfortable seat and turning our gaze outward, to the world of celebrity meditation.
Famous People Who Meditate
There’s a number of awesome differences between celebrity wellness fads that you find in celebrity journalism and the subject of celebrities that meditate.
Meditation is free to do, accessible to learn and ethically responsible
Meditation is an ancient practice, found in almost all of the religions, philosophies and traditions of the world, in one form or another.
Meditation is the most widely scientifically studied and peer reviewed, of all of the alternative and complementary therapies and disciplines; meaning we have huge amounts of stone cold evidence to support meditation as a valid and extremely beneficial wellness activity.
So let’s take a look at a list of people who meditate that also happen to be famous….
Thanks to Melissa Wozniak for this awesome list.
You can see from this list that celebrity meditation is really a thing. Models, actors, writers, musicians and athletes meditate, and if you head to the link you can read some of their reasons for taking the time and effort to regularly practice meditation.
Transcendental Meditation Celebrities
Perhaps the most famous of the famous meditation practices is Transcendental Meditation or TM. There are many famous transcendental meditation practitioners, I’ll list some here, but first let’s find out what is Transcendental Meditation.
Transcendental Mediation is a silent, mantra based meditation practice that has been practiced throughout history. The practitioner utilises the repetition of a mantra as an anchor to help them achieve peaceful submersion into a meditative state.
Although this type of meditation has existed in ancient traditions, the term was invented by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in the 1950s and taught worldwide throughout the 50s and 60s. TM was perhaps made most famous by The Beatles, who learned the technique and have advocated, along with a growing list of wellness celebrities, for its powers of transformation.
Transcendental Meditation is now trademarked and may only be taught by the organisation's teachers, a move which raises some eyebrows in the wellness world. Lessons are not cheap and there are mixed reviews on the necessity of holding the technique in such strictly secret terms.
Below is a list of modern day transcendental celebrities and celebrities who practice TM:
Thanks to Kenzie Wacknov for the above list of transcendental meditation celebrities.
Successful People Who Meditate
So why do successful people, like athletes who meditate, dedicate their precious time to sitting in quiet stillness?
Studies consistently show that meditation people lower their levels of stress chemicals such as cortisol and adrenaline which are particularly prevalent in today’s highly stressed societies. When these chemicals exist in high levels in our system over long periods of time, we do not effectively sleep, rest, restore and build immunity. We are existing in a perpetual state of fight or flight, in this state we are not utilising energy for creativity or growth, we are utilising energy purely to survive.
When people meditate regularly they lower their levels of these chemicals and increase their levels of chemicals such as dopamine, serotonin, melatonin, oxytocin, endorphins and DHEA. These chemicals and signals allow us to feel bliss, pleasure, contentment and community, they reduce feelings of pain, help us sleep deeply, promote our immune system and cell renewal. By consistently building these chemicals in our system we begin to exist in flow, we have energy to create, to imagine, to become successful; and we have the health to maintain our trajectory.
People who meditate often find that they also develop a relationship with the universe and their place within it. This sense of belonging, of being valid and supported creates a mindset of confidence which celebrities who meditate find helpful in maintaining their high profile careers.
Successful people who meditate also find that their relationships improve, a welcome benefit for us all.
Radiance and charisma begins within.
Why I wrote this…
The world of celebrity isn’t always the most wholesome place to put our attention. Meditation takes dedication, it takes time and commitment, highly successful people consider their time to be very precious. If they are using that time to sit silently, away from their adoring public, there may just be something to it.
